Living In The Past | Escaping An Unhealthy Dwelling

Living In The Past

Many people are guilty of their own suffering by meditating too much on negative experiences of their life. Living in the past can hinder personal progress. Through this misuse of memory, a person can formulate false ideas of who they potentially are.

The options that may be open to them may never be realized or manifested in their future. We act through what we believe is possible. And if we trick ourselves into these false limiting notions, then we tend to follow though and unfortunately become the bi-product of these thoughts.

Living In The PastOur memories make for great reminders as much as they can cause emotional distress. It’s in the balance to understand how to use our history to learn and grow. Focus more on the positive; in the past, present, and future. It is just as real and accessible as negative thoughts.

It is healthy to use our minds in this manner to vision and paint our future in a brighter light. Take the necessary steps to learn to use the power of the mind to create the life or things you desire. Be realistic. There are scenarios where certain things can be out of reach. Keep practicing self-assessing and finding ways to be creative!

I’ve taken these types of meditations and made it into a song to remind myself to live more positive. I enjoy sharing my lyrics (and sometimes music) with people. Because in our various forms of human behavior, we find understanding, relatable issues, and just may learn something new; of ourselves, of others. Enjoy!

Living In The PastLiving In The Past

Facing down memory lane, analyzing thoughts contained. Bringing echos of the pain. Coming down like acid rain.

It’s insane, the punishment; mixed with turmoil and regret. You put yourself up in a trance, imagination has enhanced;

Conceptions based on every gone by chance. Stubborn Jackass in your stance!

Consider even just a glance; To look ahead, at least make that advance.

Understand that seeding, budding plants, made it through the dark dirt in their expanse.

Life and nature give all the clues. So take that action GROW ON THROUGH!

THIS PIECE OF CANVAS IS YOUR WORLDPiece Of Canvas

Life moves so fast don’t get caught in the past. Take time for a laugh, make your mark on the map.

Can’t win a marathon by only running one lap. If you think inside the box you got caught in a trap.

If you’re caught in the past. Get with the present real fast! You’re missing opportunities that are falling on your lap.

The future’s wide open, you need to focus on that. Fuck the excuses, I’m sick of that crap!

Time is a limited resource, it will never last. You’re wasting precious moments when you’re living in the past.

Loved one’s gone, continue on. The night is darkest just before the dawn!

It’s part of life to bear a broken heart. You may be a victim, but don’t act the part!

What’s behind us doesn’t have to define us. Can’t build shit from a pile of dust!

And fuck those people who’ve lost your trust. Fair weather friends can catch some rust!

Close that book. End that chapter. Find some other kindred souls to share some laughter!

This isn’t all about dismiss and forgetting. But having patience with yourself and not readmitting;

The demon’s back in. So stop letting negative forces block you from where you’re heading.

Like dead-skin begin the shedding. A Phoenix with the fire; a whole new setting.

  1. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and lyrics. I find it helpful to write my thoughts down sometimes also, it just feels therapeutic getting things out. I agree about trying to move forward from the past in a positive way. Even though not always easy. I have read some good self help books by Pastor Joel Osteen, Gabby Bernstein & Wayne Dyer over the years. I don’t think I’d be good at writing songs like you lol… when I was really young I use to write poems, but I don’t see me doing that now a days. But it’s good to find ways to express ones self and get your feeling out. Good lyrics & song!

    1. It isn’t always easy to move on from the past. Anyone who’s suffered great loss will attest to that(this includes myself)! And to tell someoone to learn from the loss of a loved one or other serious pains, isn’t often gonna translate well to them. In my opinion, what one can do is learn to be strong, accepting, and do the best they can while they’re here.

      Dealing with loss will not become easier for a lot of people, but knowing it is a part of life is in itself a learning experience. Once again, as mentioned in the article, we need to move forward and vision a brighter future. Be thankful for the good memories and continue to make more.

      Thanks for your reply. And glad to share Michelle!

  2. Hi Mark
    Your song is awesome, raw and true, presumably it is one of the best ways to release our sorrow in the past. Life must move on with time, new experience is coming, never turning back. Happy or not, up to you, memories are interesting part of our life , no matter good or no, we had already experienced, that’s enough! No points to stuck into the past, take a break and then go (I like to turn off my brain and enjoy sleeping as much as I can), probably everyone could be hurt in the past, so what, if you look back that are just sort of some tests of in our life, just learn and grow. Life once, I maybe too simple or naive, but I do try my best to grab and enjoy every moment. Love your music especially lyrics, keep it up, thanks!

    1. Thank you for your compliments and checking out this article and song. I do enjoy writing, as it helps me reflect on the past. Putting it down in a song is a fun way for me to share my lessons & insights. I appreciate your feedback
